Adaptive/Assisted Learn to Skate - RETURNING FALL 2024

PGFSC is proud to introduce an adaptive learn to skate program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Hearing or Visual impairments, Sensory Processing Differences, and children who may require assistance with emotional regulation, and more. We believe skating is a must-have experience for all regardless of ability. 

Each participant will need to be accompanied by an on-ice helper. This helper should be comfortable on skates, as they will provide physical support and/or assistance to the participant during the session. There is no fee for the helper, but they will need their own skates and hockey helmet. 

Using a sensory friendly approach, sessions will be music free, there will be a visual timer for activities, visual aids, social stories, a routine structure, and the best of all - an occupational therapist on ice each session! Join us on our sensory friendly Adaptive Learn to Skate program!

SAM THEW is a registered occupation therapist (BC) practicing in pediatrics with 17 years of skating experience including figure skating, hockey and long track speed skating. 

· Master of Occupational Therapy, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology

· Experience working with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity, Visual Impairments, Hearing Impairment, Sensory Processing Differences, and Emotional     Regulation differences.

· Utilizes Sensory Friendly and Neuro-Affirming practices

· Former Junior Ladies Competitive Figure Skater

· Gold Freeskate, Skills, Interpretative and partial Dance passed

Skaters are required to have skates and a CSA approved helmet to participate.

Sessions take place:  Sundays, 4 to 4:30 pm, Kin 3 (please note there is no skating on weekends that have a stat)

HELMET POLICY: 
  • ALL CANSKATE PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A CSA APPROVED HOCKEY HELMET
  • SKATERS WITHOUT A HELMET WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE DURING THAT SESSION 
REGISTRATION NOTES:
  • Please Note: A $60 Skate Canada Insurance / Membership Fee will be charged once per participant, per skating year, Sept 1, 2023 to Aug 31, 2024
  • When registering, please note the name of the helper in the notes at checkout
